CS2 float explained: what float is and what a good float looks like
Float is the number between 0 and 1 that decides how worn a CS2 skin looks (it works the same as in CS:GO). A lower float means less wear. This guide covers the wear ranges, what counts as a good float, how to check float and how it changes the price.

What is float in CS2?
Every skin has a float value from 0.00 to 1.00 that is set when the item is created. The wear name you see in the inventory, such as Factory New or Field-Tested, is only the range that float falls into. Two Field-Tested skins can have a float of 0.16 or 0.37 and look clearly different, even though they share a name.
CS2 wear ranges
| Wear | Float range |
|---|---|
| Factory New | 0.00 – 0.07 |
| Minimal Wear | 0.07 – 0.15 |
| Field-Tested | 0.15 – 0.38 |
| Well-Worn | 0.38 – 0.45 |
| Battle-Scarred | 0.45 – 1.00 |
Many skins cannot exist in every wear because each skin has its own minimum and maximum float. The Sport Gloves | Hedge Maze, for example, has a float range of 0.06 to 0.80, so it can never go below 0.06 and its Factory New copies only sit between 0.06 and 0.07.
Is a higher or lower float better?
For looks, lower is better: less wear, cleaner paint. Within the same wear name a lower float usually sells for more. A few collectors prefer very high Battle-Scarred floats for the heavily worn look of some skins, but that is the exception.
What is a good float value?
A good float is one that is low for its wear tier. A Factory New skin below 0.01 is the cleanest you can get and carries a premium, while a Factory New at 0.065 is almost a Minimal Wear. In the same way a Minimal Wear at 0.070 looks close to Factory New, and a Field-Tested at 0.150 is the best-looking Field-Tested. What counts as good also depends on the skin's own range: if the minimum float of a skin is 0.06, then 0.061 is already the best float that skin can have.
Is a 0.00 float good?
A float close to 0.00 is the lowest wear a skin can have, which makes it desirable. Most skins cannot be exactly 0.00 though, because their minimum float is above zero, so a "perfect" float means as close as possible to the minimum of that particular skin.
Float and trade ups
In a trade up contract the output float is calculated from the inputs: the average float of the ten (or five) input skins is mapped onto the float range of the skin you receive. Lower-float inputs give a lower-float output, which is why people hunt for low-float inputs when they want a Factory New result. The exact formula and a max-input-float cheat sheet are in the trade up float guide.
How to check the float of a skin
In the game, inspect the item and the wear rating shows on the inspect screen. Third-party marketplaces display the exact float of each listing before you buy, while on the Steam Community Market you generally only see the wear name. Our inventory value checker prices every item in a public inventory, and the trade up calculator lets you enter the float of each skin you plan to use.
How much does float change the price?
The wear name sets the base price, and the table shows how steep that is for a few popular skins at live Steam prices. Within a wear, very low floats (such as a Factory New under 0.01) trade at a premium on top of this.
| Skin | Factory New | Minimal Wear | Field-Tested | Well-Worn | Battle-Scarred |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AK-47 | Redline | – | $162.18 | $36.49 | $29.63 | $26.24 |
| AWP | Asiimov | – | – | $141.40 | $107.47 | $101.54 |
FAQ
What are floats in CS2?
Float is a number from 0.00 to 1.00 that sets how worn a skin looks. The wear names (Factory New, Minimal Wear, Field-Tested, Well-Worn, Battle-Scarred) are ranges of that number.
Is higher or lower float better in CS2?
Lower float means less wear and a cleaner look, and within the same wear it usually sells for more. A few collectors prefer high floats for a heavily worn look.
What is a good float value in CS2?
A good float is low for its wear range: below 0.01 for Factory New, just above 0.07 for Minimal Wear, just above 0.15 for Field-Tested. It also depends on the skin's own minimum float.
Is a 0.0 float good?
A float near 0.00 is the lowest wear a skin can have and carries a premium, but many skins cannot reach exactly 0.00 because their minimum float is higher.
How do I check the float of a CS2 skin?
Inspect the item in the game, or check the listing on a marketplace that shows the exact float before you buy.
