Why can’t I trade up my skins in CS2?
Short answer: the trade up contract only accepts a complete, valid set of inputs. A skin is greyed out (or the contract will not sign) when it is a different rarity from the others, StatTrak™ mixed with normal skins, the wrong count (10 skins, or exactly 5 Coverts for a knife), the top rarity of its collection, a Covert with no knife pool, or an item type that cannot be used at all, such as knives, gloves and stickers.
The 7 reasons, and how to fix each one
1. The skins are not all the same rarity
Every input must be the same rarity: 10 Mil-Spec, 10 Restricted and so on. One Classified skin among nine Restricted ones blocks the contract.
Fix: Sort your inventory by rarity and fill the contract from one rarity only.
2. StatTrak™ and normal skins are mixed
A contract is either all StatTrak™ or all normal. The game will not let you add a StatTrak™ skin to a normal contract, or the reverse.
Fix: Swap the odd one out. A StatTrak™ contract gives a StatTrak™ result – see StatTrak™ trade up rules.
3. You have the wrong number of skins
Industrial Grade up to Classified needs exactly 10 inputs. Covert skins use a different contract that takes exactly 5 and returns a knife or gloves.
Fix: Count again: 10 for a normal step, 5 for a knife – see how many reds for a knife.
4. The skin is the top rarity of its collection
Each input adds its collection to the pool of possible results, so the collection must contain at least one skin one rarity higher. A skin that is already the highest rarity in its collection has nothing to trade up into. In our collection data, for example, the Office Collection tops out at Mil-Spec, the Dust and Mirage collections at Restricted, and the Bank and Baggage collections at Classified.
Fix: Check the collection in the collections list before you buy inputs, or let the calculator show the possible outcomes.
5. The Covert skin has no knife or glove pool
Since the CS2 update of October 22, 2025, five Covert skins trade up into a knife or gloves from the case of one of the inputs. Only Coverts from weapon case collections have such a pool, so Coverts from map and operation collections cannot be used.
Fix: Use Coverts from weapon cases – the knife trade up calculator lists the pool for every case.
6. The item type cannot be used
Knives, gloves and stickers can never be trade up inputs, and the contract only takes weapon skins. Contraband items such as the M4A4 | Howl are excluded as well.
Fix: Only weapon skins of a normal rarity tier go in.
7. Souvenir and trade-locked skins: these are allowed
Two things that used to block players no longer do. Souvenir skins can be used since the CS2 update of May 22, 2026 (their stickers and Souvenir status are removed), and skins with a trade hold can be used too – only the result keeps the lock.
Fix: Details: Souvenir trade ups and trade-locked skins.

Why is the trade up button greyed out in CS2?
The contract only unlocks with a complete, valid set: 10 skins of one rarity (or exactly 5 Covert skins for a knife), all StatTrak™ or all normal, and every input from a collection that has a skin one rarity higher.
Why can’t I add a skin to my trade up contract?
Most often it is a different rarity than the skins already in the contract, it is StatTrak™ while the others are normal (or the reverse), or it is the highest rarity in its collection, so there is nothing to trade up into.
Can I trade up skins from any collection?
Only if the collection has at least one skin of the next rarity. The Office Collection tops out at Mil-Spec, the Dust and Mirage collections at Restricted, and the Bank and Baggage collections at Classified, so their top-rarity skins cannot be used.
Why can’t I put 10 Covert skins in a trade up?
Covert is the top of the 10-skin ladder. Since the October 22, 2025 update, Covert skins only go into the knife contract, which takes exactly 5, and only Coverts from weapon case collections have a knife or glove pool.
